Construction on the new Wels Terminal, aiming to improve efficiency, flexibility, and safety in goods transport has begun. The upgrade includes extending the craneable length of four loading tracks to 700 meters, accommodating entire trains. A new connection to the Western Line in the eastern section will create a modern through-terminal.
Since the early 1990s, the Wels Terminal has been a major freight hub for ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. To meet modern freight transport needs, the terminal is undergoing a complete rebuild and modernization, with a 68 million euro investment from ÖBB and the European Union, slated for completion in 2027.
The redevelopment plan includes demolishing the existing in-gate, administrative, and customs buildings and reconstructing them in different locations. This will create space for track layouts and storage areas, optimizing land use and traffic flow, and expanding trailer, container, and swap body storage spaces. A railway crossing will be constructed for the Rolling Highway and the parking area for semi-trailers.
The Wels Terminal, located on the Western Line and the Rhine-Danube Corridor, is a crucial interchange in the international rail network, geographically positioned at the crossroads of key routes in Europe and within a robust industrial region with significant growth potential, including direct highway access.
