The agreement between railway infrastructure companies will enable joint work development of passenger and freight rail transport between the countries in order to increase the export-import potential.

On 28 August 2023, Polskie Koleje Państwowe Spółka Akcyjna (PKP SA) and JSC Ukrzaliznytsia signed an agreement to develop railway connectivity between the two countries, the first such agreement in 28 years.

The development will be aimed at uninterrupted transportation of passengers and freight by rail. Both companies will form joint working groups to develop projects for separate agreements.

Two specific measures in freight rail have been agreed:

  • Cargo transhipment between the different gauges can be performed by the handing over carrier (at the border station located on its territory), not only the receiving one.
  • Locomotive service between the two border stations will be carried out by locomotives and crews of Ukrzaliznytsia PKP SA with 50/50 parity.

Ukrzaliznytsia is making efforts to improve its connectivity to its western neighbours. It has recently simplified freight train transit through its territory in the south with Moldova
