The extensive initiative, focused on improving safety and operational efficiency, included upgrading tracks, bridges, and public grade crossings and installing advanced safety systems.

Norfolk Southern Corporation marked a significant milestone in 2023 by completing $1 billion in infrastructure improvements across its 22-state network. The initiative, designed to improve safety and operational efficiency, included extensive upgrades to tracks, bridges, and public crossings, as well as safety infrastructure enhancements. Paul Duncan, Executive Vice President, and Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the investment as a cornerstone of the company's commitment to providing reliable and safe service. The upgrades included the installation of 108 hot box detectors, 17 acoustic bearing detectors, and the construction of two digital train inspection portals.

The project also included significant track work, with 619 miles of track upgraded - an 8% increase by 2022. In addition, more than 2.1 million replacement crossties were installed and 1,745 miles of track were resurfaced. Bridge improvements were also significant, with 40 bridges replaced and numerous inspections carried out to ensure structural integrity.

Public level crossings have not been overlooked, with 110 level crossing warning systems added to improve safety for both rail users and the general public. Ed Boyle, Vice President of Engineering, said the collaborative efforts of the engineering team were key to achieving these on-time and on-budget results, which reflect Norfolk Southern's commitment to operational excellence and safety. As Norfolk Southern looks ahead to 2024, the company remains focused on further improving its infrastructure to support efficient and safe rail operations and reinforce its role as a vital connector across the United States.
