The approval applies to multiple European countries, enabling cross-border freight operations under the latest interoperability and safety standards.

=The Siemens Eurosprinter ES64F4 locomotives have received type authorisation under the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) for operation with ETCS Baseline 3.4.

The upgraded units are equipped with Siemens’ Atlas ETCS system and are now authorised for use in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The project began with a contract awarded in December 2020, and the first prototype was completed within 16 months. Siemens Mobility states that the upgrade programme is part of its wider approach to lifecycle support and modernisation of existing fleets.

More than 250 units of the ES64F4 series have been in operation since their introduction in the early 2000s. The recent upgrade ensures continued compliance with European signalling requirements and aims to extend the operational relevance of the locomotives across key international freight corridors.
