By saving a former marine engines factory in Trieste, MSC might enter the manufacturing world in transport.

A New Era for the Wärtsilä Plant in Trieste. MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) has announced its plans to take over the Wärtsilä factory in Bagnoli della Rosandra, Trieste. This is a significant shift for the plant, transitioning from its original purpose of engine production to becoming a centre for railway wagon manufacturing.

The acquisition, strikingly made for the symbolic price of 1 euro, comes with a commitment from MSC to not only rehire all 300 employees affected by the closure of the Finnish multinational’s plant but also to expand its workforce through new hires.

Gianluigi Aponte revealed this ambitious plan in Genoa, during a meeting with key regional and maritime officials, as Il Piccolo and Shipmag report. This move means a strategic expansion of MSC's operational capabilities.

MSC, a global leader in shipping and logistics, already boasts a significant presence in railway transportation through its subsidiaries, Medway and Medlog. By acquiring the Wärtsilä plant, MSC aims to further its competitive edge by manufacturing its own railway wagons, specifically designed for container transport. This initiative follows another recent acquisition of a majority stake in Italo, Italy's second-largest high-speed rail operator, to further delve into freight transport alongside passenger services.

Furthermore, Aponte's discussions in Genoa and his commitments reflect a broader vision for MSC's involvement in the Ligurian region, including continued investments in port facilities and the potential privatization of the Christopher Columbus airport. This holistic approach to infrastructure development showcases MSC's dedication to enhancing Italy's transport and logistics framework, promising a more integrated and efficient future for freight and passenger transport alike.
