Portuguese locomotives will receive ETCS+STM solution for Convel interoperability

The rollout is intended for approximately 100 vehicles and was demonstrated during an event held in Poceirão. The development is a result of collaboration between Critical Software, Hitachi Rail, MEDWAY Transports and Logistics, Stadler Rail, and Alpha Trains. The objective is to ensure compatibility between the national CONVEL system and ETCS, allowing for interoperability across the railway network in Portugal and beyond.

The new system has received SIL 4 certification, indicating the highest safety integrity level for train protection systems. Alpha Trains plans to install the planned upgrade to its Stadler Euro 6000 locomotive fleet.

The consortium states that this configuration is already undergoing testing and the onboard equipment is expected to be installed on around 100 vehicles. The demonstration involved an operational presentation, indicating readiness for wider deployment.

The system’s adoption is expected to permit broader access for rolling stock and infrastructure operators within and outside of Portugal. The involved companies operate across various sectors of rail supply, logistics, vehicle leasing, and signalling technology.
