The deal will include, but not be limited to, HVO use in trains.

FS Group has entered into a three-year agreement with Eni to explore and develop alternative fuels for transport, intermodal logistics solutions, and best practices in energy efficiency. This agreement renews a previous letter of intent and includes the identification of norms, methods, technical standards, and verification of new technologies related to sustainability and the circular economy.

Trial Runs and Future Plans

Since 2023, FS and Eni have been testing HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuel in five Trenitalia trains, including modern triple-fuel Hitachi hybrid trains, on routes in Calabria. The trial has expanded to include Busitalia buses, with plans to extend testing to other diesel trains in the Trenitalia fleet in the coming months. The HVO biofuel, made from renewable materials like waste and residues, aims to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to traditional diesel.

HVO Biofuel Supply

To ensure an adequate supply of HVO biofuel, FS launched a tender in April. FS's broader energy strategy is to eliminate fossil fuels through the progressive electrification of railway networks and the adoption of alternative fuels. This strategy supports FS's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, a decade ahead of European targets.

HVO, or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, is a biofuel derived from renewable sources such as waste and residues. It offers performance comparable to traditional fuels and significantly reduces CO2 emissions along the entire product lifecycle.
