CAF’s on-board ERTMS and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) systems will now be operating on over 1,300 rail vehicles, both new and retrofit.

CAF Group had its most successful year in ERTMS orders in 2023, securing contracts to equip over 450 vehicles with the on-board European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), named AURIGA at CAF.

Founded as a Group company 14 years ago, CAF's signalling business has seen rapid growth in less than a decade since its first contract, demonstrating remarkable expansion across the globe. The company now boasts projects in more than a dozen countries across four continents, including Spain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Uruguay, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia.

Initially bolstered by CAF's vehicle business, the signalling division has since flourished independently, serving other rolling stock manufacturers and leading operators like Renfe, Euskotren, NS, Deutsche Bahn, KiwiRail, České Dráhy, and Správa železnic.

Last year’s achievement of contracting over 450 vehicles with onboard ERTMS has positioned CAF as a leading supplier in the signalling sector globally. The company is a dominant player in markets such as the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, with significant equipment contracts and a 100% market share in New Zealand's on-board ERTMS market.

Looking ahead to 2024, CAF anticipates a continuation of this positive trend, with key projects on the horizon. These include the commissioning and certification of the ERTMS on-board project with Deutsche Bahn in Germany, the authorization for service of ATO on ERTMS in Auckland, New Zealand, and the launch of technically complex projects like the on-board ERTMS for SJ trains in Sweden and Stadler locomotives in Uruguay.

The company is set to implement around 30 first-in-class projects, aligned with the new European Technical Specification for Interoperability (TSI CMS) 2023, and continues to engage in high-value technological collaboration projects. Notable among these is the project with the Dutch national operator NS, focusing on the development and testing of autonomous vehicle technologies, including ATO, Automatic Shunting, and Remote Shunting.
