On 24 April 2023, the EU Cohesion Fund 2014-2020 approved an investment of over €190 million for Slovakia to enhance the marshalling yard in Žilina-Teplička, which is a crucial part of the Trans-European Transport Network.

The project involves rebuilding and upgrading 7.85 km of railway, including dismantling the old track, laying supporting structures, constructing two platforms and extended noise barriers, building or rebuilding six railway bridges, four road bridges, and one new road bridge, as well as six underpasses. Additionally, five pedestrian and cyclist underpasses will be built and extended, and an electronic interlocking signalling system with a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) signalling equipment will be established for the Žilina railway hub.

The project aims to increase the capacity of the rail network, shorten journey times, and improve the safety and reliability of rail services. Moreover, a new alternating current power supply will ensure railway interoperability and reduce energy costs, while also supporting people with reduced mobility to access stations and trains.

This project complements not only the first phase of the marshalling yard modernisation but the overall reconstruction of the Žilina railway station, which is currently ongoing. This involves the dismantling of the old marshalling yard, complete modernisation of the passengers’ station and switching from a 3kV DC to a 25 kV AC catenary system.
