The route follows a new corridor and is the first entirely new railway connection constructed in independent Slovenia.

A test train ran on 11 March 2026 on the newly built second track between Divača and Koper, opening the 27 km railway line.

The line includes seven tunnels and three viaducts across karst terrain. Construction of access roads began in 2019, with main works starting in 2021. The project company 2TDK oversaw delivery, while the principal contractors for civil and railway works were Kolektor CPG and Železniško gradbeno podjetje Ljubljana, working with domestic and international partners.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the project remained within the financial framework set in 2019 under the initial investment programme. The line is designed to improve capacity and operational performance on the corridor linking the Port of Koper with inland Slovenia and Central Europe.

For most of its length, the track is built on a rigid slab track system, intended to increase infrastructure stability and reduce maintenance requirements. The project also includes the longest railway tunnel in Slovenia and represents one of the most complex infrastructure schemes undertaken in the country.
