The newly formed partnership will enhance intermodal transport solutions across Italy and Europe. Codognotto and GTS aim to pool their resources to optimise freight movement.

This strategic collaboration is intended to harness the best of both companies’ intermodal expertise, infrastructure, and networks to streamline freight loads and maximise efficiency across various modes of transport.

Intermodal transport's rise has reshaped Italy's logistics, offering a blended transport approach combining road, rail, and sea. This results in quicker transit times, cost savings, and a notable reduction in environmental impact. Despite existing railway infrastructure challenges, both firms remain optimistic about the prospects of intermodal transport, especially given its potential to reduce CO2 emissions.

The partnership will expand GTS’s reach to Poland and introduce new routes within Italy, connecting Piacenza to other parts of Europe. The Piacenza – Gliwice train route, serviced by GTS Rail, currently operates eight times a week, with plans to potentially double the frequency. The trains predominantly transport food, beverages, furniture, and steel products.

Over the past two years, Codognotto Group has funnelled more than 10 million Euros into enhancing its intermodal capabilities, focusing on digital transformation and introducing vehicles tailored for combined road-rail transport. Meanwhile, GTS cemented its commitment to the sector in 2008 with the acquisition of GTS Rail, positioning itself as a frontrunner in Italy's railway industry.

The collaboration projects to shift 50,000 tons of goods from road to rail annually, corresponding to a reduction of 2,000 trucks on the roads each year.
