DB Cargo Nederland has taken a pioneering step by embarking on a trial of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a green alternative to conventional diesel. DB Cargo Nederland is the first Dutch railway company to trial HVO, aiming to reduce CO2e emissions by around 90% over the fuel lifecycle. The innovative six-month trial on the Eemshaven, Delfzijl and Veendam lines will validate the seamless integration of HVO and its positive environmental impact.
The trial phase will focus on assessing the performance of HVO in real-world operating conditions, ensuring that engine efficiency is not compromised, while confirming its effectiveness as a substitute for conventional fossil diesel.
State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructure and Water Management) expressed her support for DB Cargo's efforts and emphasized the importance of exploring zero-emission alternatives as an essential part of the transition to greener transport solutions. She praised market-driven innovations for their practicality and potential to make a significant contribution to sustainability.
The ongoing HVO trial by DB Cargo Nederland is an important step toward promoting greener practices within the rail industry. While DB Cargo Nederland relies mainly on electric locomotives powered by renewable energy, diesel engines remain indispensable in certain areas such as terminals, ports, and customer premises. In such cases, HVO serves as an ideal bridging technology, providing a fossil-free and low-emission alternative until more advanced propulsion technologies are available.
