Direct Rail Services (DRS) has initiated a trial rail service connecting Teesport with Manchester, introducing ultra-low IDA wagons to the route.
The IDA wagons used on the route enable the transportation of high-cube containers, which were previously limited by clearance restrictions on Trans Pennine rail corridors. By offering this capability, the service aims to shift cargo that has traditionally relied on road transport.
The service operates from the PD Ports-owned terminal in Teesport and is positioned as an alternative logistics option for businesses moving goods between the northeast and northwest of England. Trans Pennine freight movements have historically been restricted due to infrastructure constraints, including clearance limitations at tunnels and bridges. While upgrades to the route are scheduled, the trial provides an immediate rail-based solution.
Rail freight is presented as a means of reducing road congestion and emissions, with each train having the potential to replace multiple truck movements. The outcome of the trial is expected to determine the viability of making the service a regular option for freight operators.
