The deployment of these locomotives is part of a broader initiative to modernize DB Cargo's fleet and make freight transportation more environmentally friendly.

DB Cargo has introduced a new fleet of locomotives, known as the Vectron Dual Mode light, which are designed by Siemens Mobility to operate using both electric and diesel power. This innovation is aimed at improving the efficiency and flexibility of freight transport by allowing the locomotives to switch between power modes depending on the availability of overhead lines. The Vectron Dual Mode light locomotives are lighter compared to their predecessors, improving their operational efficiency, and enabling access to branch lines and sidings with lower load capacities.

By using green electricity and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) diesel, derived from cooking oils, the company aims to offer its customers nearly CO2-free supply chains from start to finish. The introduction of these dual-power locomotives is expected to reduce the need for time-consuming shunting and maneuvering, thus speeding up the transportation process.

DB Cargo has placed an initial order for 150 Vectron Dual Mode light locomotives from Siemens Mobility. This move is projected to save approximately 12 million liters of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 25,000 tons per year. The first of these locomotives will be used around Halle (Saale), in what is considered Europe's most modern marshalling yard, allowing DB Cargo's regional customers to be among the first to benefit from this technology.

The locomotives are also equipped with digital technologies, including the ability for remote control shunting and the modern European Train Control System (ETCS), preparing them for future digital train operations. This technological advancement is aimed at not only reducing environmental impact but also lowering maintenance efforts and enhancing the flexibility of freight transportation.

With a goal to equip approximately 70 percent of its diesel locomotives with innovative drives by 2030, DB Cargo is taking a significant step towards more sustainable rail freight transport. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to adapting to customer needs and environmental considerations by utilizing locomotives capable of operating under all conditions.
