During a successful demonstration project in Quebec, the Coradia iLint made history as the first hydrogen-powered train to transport passengers in North America.

Alstom, a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, received the Canadian Urban Transit Association’s (CUTA) Environmental Sustainability Award. This award recognizes Alstom's achievement with the Coradia iLint, a hydrogen-powered train that marks a significant step forward in transit innovation in North America.

The Coradia iLint made history by becoming North America's first hydrogen-powered train to transport passengers. It operated on Quebec's Réseau Charlevoix rail network from mid-June to late September 2023, carrying more than 10,000 passengers as part of a demonstration project.

“This summer, we demonstrated that hydrogen trains can be an attractive, safe, and viable alternative to diesel on non-electrified lines and that Alstom can do it right here in North America,” said Michael Keroullé, President Alstom Americas.

The use of Alstom's hydrogen-powered train on this route significantly reduced the environmental impact. It saved around 8,400 liters of diesel and prevented 22 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to standard diesel trains operating on the route. In addition, the project has created a hydrogen ecosystem in North America covering production, refueling, and operations, laying the foundations for sustainable transport solutions in the heavy haul sector.
