The Metro Project is the backbone of the public transport network in Riyadh, capable of transporting 3.6 million passengers per day.

With six lines totalling 176 km and 85 metro stations, the metro network will serve the majority of highly inhabited districts, public amenities, as well as educational, commercial, and medical institutions. The network will connect King Khalid International Airport and King Abdullah Financial District, as well as the major universities, downtown Riyadh, and the public transportation hub.

The project features 190 fully automated trains:

  • 74 Inspiro sets for Lines 1 and 2, supplied by Siemens
  • 47 Innovia Metro 300 trains for Line 3, supplied by Bombardier
  • 69 Metropolis sets for Lines 4, 5 and 6, supplied by Alstom

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, stated: "Riyadh is rapidly growing and thriving economically. To support a growing population, the Saudi Arabian Government is implementing one of the world's largest public transport systems. This investment creates an efficient, safe, and sustainable transportation network, generates thousands of jobs, and boosts the economy."

"The Riyadh Metro is not just a transportation system; it is a symbol of Saudi Arabia's forward-thinking vision and its commitment to sustainable growth," said Mohamed Khalil, Managing Director of Alstom Middle East Regional Headquarters.

The Riyadh public transport network consists of:

  • 6 metro lines
  • 85 metro stations
  • 80 bus routes
  • 2,860 bus stops
  • 842 buses

This state-of-the-art transportation system not only meets Riyadh´s present transportation needs but also supports the increasing mobility demands as Saudi Arabia prepares to co-host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, welcome the World Expo 2030, host the 2034 Asian Games, and bid for the FIFA World Cup 2034. Construction for the project started in 2013.
