The rail journey to León took approximately two and a half hours.

A new regular freight rail service between the Port of El Musel in Gijón and León began operations on 11 February. The first train, operated by Medlog for MSC, carried 36 20-foot containers loaded with imported agri-food products.

The containers had been unloaded at APM Terminals in El Musel after arriving on MSC vessels serving the hub ports of Antwerp and Sines.

The service will initially run once a week, with plans to increase frequency to two weekly rotations. The connection combines maritime arrivals at El Musel with rail distribution inland, linking Asturias with the province of León.

According to the Port Authority of Gijón, each train movement replaces up to 72 truck journeys on the road corridor between the port and León. The authority said the service complements direct road deliveries and supports container traffic growth in Asturias and Castile and León.
