Metrans expands rail network to south-east Europe

With investments in Croatian Adria Rail and an additional terminal in Hungary, Metrans is expanding its high-frequency rail connection and hinterland terminal services.

Metrans, the rail subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), has acquired a 51 per cent stake in the Croatian Adria Rail. With its stake in Adria Rail, Metrans now operates its first terminal in Serbia. This is because the inland terminal in the Serbian town of Indija, near the capital Belgrade, also belongs to Adria Rail.

The company is investing in Hungary as well. In addition to the hub terminal in Zalaegerszeg, which is already under construction, another terminal is being built in the Hungarian city of Szeged. Both inland terminals are expected to be operational by 2025.

Peter Kiss, CEO of Metrans Group: "The countries of Southeast Europe are experiencing dynamic growth, which requires new logistics solutions. We want to provide climate-friendly rail transport that efficiently connects freight flows and hubs across Europe. We are pleased to be able to offer our customers an even wider range of services, with many containers already being transported carbon-free by rail".

In 2022, Metrans transported 1.4 million TEUs across Europe via more than 650 regular rail connections per week. Last year also saw the commissioning of three additional cranes in Budapest, Ceska Trebova and Dunajska Streda. In the same year, Metrans established new connections to Gdansk, Istanbul and Constanta. And last but not least, almost one million standard containers were transported completely carbon-free in 2022.
