The cargo was flagged off at platform 1 of Kuala Lumpur station with 40 wagons heading from Port Klang to Padang Besar.
This new partnership will connect key inland points to seaports throughout the Malaysian peninsula, providing a better trade route for import and export goods. This will significantly reduce the transit time to 4 days and be cost effective for all import and export customers in Malaysia's inland areas.
The agreement was signed by the Group Chief Executive Officer of KTMB, Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin and the Managing Director of COSCO Shipping Lines (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd, Jamie Song Mingzhi. The event was graced and witnessed by the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke and the Deputy Chief of Mission & Minister of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Malaysia, Tang Rui.
Rani Hisham said in a statement: "We have targeted to move 400 wagons per month (800 TEUs per month) covering Penang Port, Port Klang and Padang Besar as an initial step. COSCO will then expand its coverage to Pasir Gudang and Ipoh in due course".
According to Anthony Loke, the service is expected to attract partners from road haulage companies, port operators, freight forwarders, intermodal terminal operators and third party logistics providers to collaborate in transforming the supply chain and streamlining delivery services.
