Adif and Exolum study railway network for liquid bulk transport

This collaboration addresses logistics requirements in the evolving energy sector while supporting more sustainable freight transport practices.

Adif and Exolum have entered into an agreement to explore the establishment of a railway logistics network for the transport of liquid bulk products. The proposed network would connect Exolum's facilities with Adif's railway infrastructure, focusing on materials such as captured CO₂, ammonia, methanol, biofuels, and other raw materials.

The study, overseen by the Office of the Commissioner for the Atlantic Corridor, includes assessing the capacity of Adif's infrastructure to accommodate such traffic. Feasibility analyses will examine track capacity and the potential for new sidings and access points in private facilities. The aim is to enable transport from production sites to storage terminals located in major ports, with an emphasis on the Atlantic Corridor.

The initiative uses existing infrastructure, which is expected to expedite implementation while limiting environmental and social impacts. Exolum’s network currently includes railway sidings at 17 terminals in Spain connected to Adif, along with prior experience in rail transport of liquid bulk and energy products.

The envisioned logistics network would facilitate the transport of captured CO₂ for sequestration or reuse, contributing to emission reductions. It would also enable rail-based movement of e-fuels like e-ammonia and e-methanol, as well as raw materials such as vegetable oils and fats, and biofuels including biomethanol and bioethanol.

The agreement aligns with objectives to increase rail freight traffic in the Atlantic Corridor and improve intermodal transport solutions. Further technical studies and advisory actions are planned to evaluate the practicality of integrating the network into existing rail and port systems.
