On November 16, Siemens Mobility and Bane NOR launched ERTMS on the Gjøvik Line North. This is the first time a Norwegian railway line has used ERTMS technology.

The Gjøvik Line North, which runs 67 km from Roa to Gjøvik, now operates without traditional trackside signals. Instead, real-time data from the onboard ETCS Level 2 system improves the passenger experience and dependability via electronic monitoring, lowering infrastructure costs while improving queue capacity and availability.

Sverre Kjenne, Executive Vice President of Digitization and Technology at Bane NOR, states: “The introduction of ERTMS is the largest digitization program being implemented in Norway. With ERTMS on this section, we have a solid foundation for further rollout to the rest of the country. This provides both us at Bane NOR and the other affected parties with valuable operational experience and confidence for the further rollout that will take place in the coming years.”

Agustin Escobar Cañadas, CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, says: “With the launch of the ERTMS-equipped Gjøvik Line North, Bane NOR takes a significant step towards establishing the most advanced holistic railway network in Europe. This ambitious endeavor positions Norway as a trailblazer in the adoption of digital technologies within the rail industry, as we deploy cutting-edge signaling technology. Collaborating closely with Bane NOR, Siemens Mobility will revolutionize the entire Norwegian rail network into a fully digitalized IP-based system, truly embodying the concept of an Internet of Things.”

To support ERTMS in full operation on the Gjøvik Line North, Siemens Mobility has deployed an extensive infrastructure network, including 103 axle counters, nine level crossings, and 399 balises. Stations have also been modernised with new equipment and centralised operations, replacing obsolete relay systems with a single Central Computer Facility (CCF).
