Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility said the operator has invested EUR 520m in 70 trains for medium-distance and commuter services.

Renfe’s new CAF 480 series electric trains are undergoing certification at the VUZ Test Centre Velim in the Czech Republic. Transport Minister Óscar Puente visited the Velim test track on 17 June to review part of the certification process. The trains are being built by CAF at its Beasain plant in Gipuzkoa and are in the final phase of manufacturing and certification.

Renfe has ordered 61 Iberian-gauge units and nine standard-gauge UIC units. The Iberian-gauge order comprises 15 standard and 46 extended trains, while the standard-gauge units are extended versions.

The first units are planned to enter service in 2027 on the Valencian network, where they will be used on services along the Mediterranean Corridor. The remaining trains will be introduced gradually on Renfe’s medium-distance and commuter networks.

The CAF 480 series has a maximum speed of 200 km/h and capacity for up to 264 passengers. The dual-voltage trains are equipped with batteries for last-mile operation and use on non-electrified sections.

Passenger equipment includes bicycle areas, power sockets, information screens and onboard Wi-Fi. The 70-train order forms part of Renfe’s wider fleet renewal plan, which also includes new high-capacity Stadler units for Madrid commuter services.

The VUZ Test Centre Velim has two closed test circuits without commercial traffic. The large circuit is 13.2 km long and supports testing up to 230 km/h, while the small circuit is 3.9 km long and supports speeds up to 90 km/h.
