ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is transporting industrial residues between Sweden and Germany for Befesa, using return loads to reduce empty movements.

The transport chain starts in Älmhult in southern Sweden, where MOBILER containers are prepared at the IKEA terminal before being loaded with salt slag at Stena Aluminium.

The material, a residue from aluminium production, is then carried through RCG’s single-wagonload network to Befesa facilities in Germany.

Up to 11,000 tonnes per year are transported to Hannover for Befesa Salzschlacke GmbH. A further 4,000 tonnes annually are routed through the Maxi Terminal in Hamm and then delivered to Befesa’s site in Lünen.

The system also uses return journeys. Around one-third of the containers are reloaded with REKAL salt for the journey back, reducing the number of empty movements.

RCG uses MOBILER carrier wagons and containers, which can be transferred between rail and road without conventional crane equipment. This allows rail transport to serve sites without a direct siding.

According to RCG, the arrangement replaces around 600 truck journeys per year carrying salt slag and a further 240 journeys transporting REKAL salt. RCG handles around 90% of the end-to-end logistics package, including rail transport and the provision of MOBILER equipment.
