This initiative is part of a larger strategy to transport LPG efficiently from the Richards Bay LPG terminal in KwaZulu-Natal to South Africa’s economic heartland and neighboring regions.

Petredec and Transnet Freight Rail have entered into a new partnership aimed at improving the distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in South Africa. The collaboration will introduce a dedicated rail freight system and an LPG intermodal hub located at Sentrarand in Gauteng, designed to streamline logistics and support the country's growing demand for LPG.

The Sentrarand hub will serve as a key point for distributing LPG, utilizing scheduled rail services with each train capable of carrying over 2,500 tons of LPG in 75-wagon sets. The trains are expected to operate up to three times a week.

The Richards Bay terminal, developed in partnership with Bidvest Tank Terminals, has played a central role in supporting this project. The newly established logistics system aims to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of LPG distribution, offering a scalable solution that reduces reliance on road transportation.

This development also highlights broader infrastructural investments within South Africa, particularly in sectors like clean energy and logistics. Petredec’s planned hub at Sentrarand will be central to LPG distribution in the region, providing a more sustainable method for meeting energy demands across the country.

Key Points:

  • LPG Hub at Sentrarand: The new facility will act as a central distribution point for South Africa and the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
  • Rail-Based Distribution: The project will introduce South Africa’s first scheduled LPG train system, with multiple weekly services designed to increase the efficiency of LPG transport.
  • Environmental and Logistical Benefits: Rail-based logistics for LPG transport is expected to improve distribution efficiency, reduce transport costs, and offer an environmentally friendlier alternative to road-based freight.
  • Partnership with Transnet Freight Rail: As a state-owned entity, Transnet will provide logistics infrastructure, further supporting national energy goals by facilitating large-scale LPG distribution.

Scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2028, this project is part of broader efforts to develop key LPG infrastructure across the region, aiming to address energy security and clean cooking solutions for millions of people.
