GB Railfreight has launched a CEO succession process and announced two senior promotions as it marks 25 years in operation.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has initiated a leadership transition, alongside two senior promotions, as the UK’s largest rail freight operator prepares for its next phase of growth.

Chief Executive Officer John Smith has begun the process of appointing his successor, with the transition expected to take place over the coming year. He will remain in his role during this period to ensure continuity.

At the same time, Liam Day has been appointed Interim Managing Director, while Ian Langton takes on the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Day has been with GBRf since 2014, joining from Network Rail and progressing through commercial and asset-focused roles. Langton brings more than two decades of rail freight experience, including previous roles at DB Schenker and British Rail, and has been leading GBRf’s operational delivery in recent years.

“This transition is being carefully managed over the coming year, and I remain fully committed to leading the business throughout this period,” said CEO John Smith.

The move comes as GBRf marks its 25th anniversary and consolidates its position as the UK’s largest rail freight operator, with continued investment in fleet and operations supporting long-term growth.
