Amtrak has moved the first Airo trainset for the Amtrak Cascades corridor to the Pacific Northwest for final testing ahead of entry into service later this year.
Initial testing was carried out at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, where core systems were validated on a dedicated test track. The train then operated on the Northeast Corridor, where Amtrak manages the infrastructure, to conduct trials on active mainline tracks.
The trainset is now undergoing route testing, staff training and trial operations on the Amtrak Cascades corridor. These tests precede the start of revenue service in the Pacific Northwest.
The Airo fleet forms part of Amtrak’s fleet renewal programme and is being manufactured in the United States. The new trainsets are intended to replace existing rolling stock on several state-supported corridors, including Amtrak Cascades.
