The trains are scheduled for deployment as part of a new operational contract covering the period from December 2028 to December 2043.

The contract foresees an annual service volume of approximately 3.6 million scheduled train-kilometres. The Stadler FLIRT Akku units are capable of operating on non-electrified lines by using battery power for distances of up to 80 kilometres. Energy is stored during operation under overhead lines, allowing for catenary-free sections. This configuration targets a reduction in emissions along partially electrified routes.

Each unit offers 160 seating positions, including 148 fixed seats and 12 leaning aids. The design also includes dedicated areas without folding seats for bicycles, wheelchairs, and pushchairs. The vehicles are equipped with features such as Wi-Fi, video surveillance, real-time passenger information systems, and barrier-free access.

A uniform exterior and interior design has been established for these trains. The visual standard is expected to be extended to other regions within Thuringia, aiming to increase recognisability across the local rail network.

The order adds to DB Regio’s expanding portfolio of FLIRT Akku trains, following previous procurements including 44 units for the Palatinate network. In total, 151 FLIRT Akku trains are on order or already in use across Germany.

Stadler currently supplies about half of all alternative drive trains in Europe. The manufacturer continues to deliver rolling stock for partially non-electrified routes, focusing on battery and hydrogen technologies across several regional contracts.

While financial details were not disclosed in the press statement, based on previous comparable procurements in Germany, the cost of 19 FLIRT Akku units is estimated to range between €100–120 million, depending on configuration and maintenance arrangements.
