Polish intermodal rail reaches record 17.1% share, PCC Intermodal leads

The sector recorded its highest historical market presence despite a general decline in national freight volumes below 220 million tons.

The Polish intermodal rail market reached 28.38 million tons and 9.61 billion tkm in 2025, representing year-on-year increases of 2.6% and 2.8%. These figures constitute 13% of total rail freight by mass and 17.1% by transport performance. Total container volume grew 7.4% to 2.92 million TEU, supported by a record fourth quarter where throughput exceeded 806,000 TEU.

Market concentration remains high among 39 active carriers, with the top three companies controlling over 50% of the segment.

PKP Cargo leads by tonnage with a 19.67% share, ahead of PCC Intermodal at 19.13% and DB Cargo Polska at 11.61%.

In transport performance, PCC Intermodal holds the primary position at 21.31%, followed by PKP Cargo at 19.48% and DB Cargo Polska at 13.26%. Secondary operators include Metrans Rail with 5.39% of transport performance and Alza Cargo at 4.74%.

Maritime transshipments at Polish ports increased 18% to 3.9 million TEU. The Port of Gdańsk handled 2.77 million TEU, while Gdynia exceeded 1 million TEU for the first time. The Małaszewicze-Brześć hub remains the primary gateway for Euro-Asian traffic, processing 89.6% of rail shipments from China to the European Union.

Standard containers account for over 90% of the unit structure. Semi-trailers moved via rail increased to 5.2% of units, totaling 94,943 units.

Carriers utilized EUR 16.7m (PLN 72m) in infrastructure access discounts, with 27 operators qualifying for a combined 50% maximum rate reduction. Infrastructure requirements for the corridor networks emphasize the expansion of tracks to accommodate 750-meter train lengths.
