The Italian carrier is relying on the new state-of-the-art Lesegno freight station.

The subsidiary of DB Cargo is expanding its network of single freight wagons in Italy to provide customers such as steel manufacturer Riva Acciao with tailor-made logistics solutions in combined transport. Steel transport in particular has a long tradition in Italy. By the beginning of 2022, DB Cargo Italia had transported more than one million tonnes.

For the Riva Group, the transition to rail is uncomplicated because the company already has its sidings. In mid-May, the first flat car with steel profiles set off from Lesegna station in Piedmont, northern Italy, to its destination in Emilia-Romagna.

"Virtually all of our customers are interested in improving their processes, and in doing so they are making a real contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. This also explains their increased interest in transporting more goods and products by rail. Green rail is thriving because it creates the best conditions for reducing CO2 emissions," confirms Sarah Erian from DB Cargo Italia's International Sales Italy division.

The procedure in Riva Acciao is as follows: The freight wagons are unloaded at the rail port in Lanza and then transported by a forwarding company by trucks the last mile to the Riva Group's end customers.

Looking to the future, Sarah Erian is positive: "More projects like the one in Lesegn are planned. So Italian transport will not only continue to expand with steel but in time there will be new arrival and departure points or even new connections."
