Mercedes inbound rail logistics: just-in-time supply of vehicle parts

Inbound logistics for Mercedes-Benz production relies on a Europe-wide network called Mercedes-Benz RailNet, operated by DB Cargo Logistics. The network provides direct connections between suppliers and production plants. Rail-only or intermodal transport services are deployed depending on specific needs. During capacity constraints or peak periods, trucks complement rail services.

All transport operations are designed to meet the tight timing of automotive production systems. A central hub located in Kornwestheim supports the process. The yard serves as a buffer area for managing load flows to various Mercedes-Benz plants. A local unit at the site coordinates operations.

Outbound rail logistics for Mercedes: finished vehicles moved by block trains

For outbound logistics, DB Cargo Logistics handles the shipment of finished vehicles to distribution points across Europe. This involves the use of block train services and dedicated car carrier wagons. The vehicles are loaded in plants such as Sindelfingen and shipped to ports like Bremerhaven. The return leg of these services can be used to bring imported vehicles back to inland facilities, enabling better capacity utilization.
