The deadline extension for the procurement of the Rail Baltica energy subsystem design and construction for the entire Rail Baltica line, which covers more than 870 km in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, has been extended to 14 September 2022.

The public procurement for the electrification of high-speed railways was launched by Rail Baltica on 1 June 2022 and is considered the largest railway electrification project in Europe implemented as a single project. The procurement procedure is carried out in two stages and is planned to be concluded by the end of 2023. The reason for the extension is the scope and complexity of the electrification project and the tender procedure.

“While we do not expect that this decision would have an impact on the general procurement timeline, extra time would allow all potential suppliers and partners to ensure higher quality submissions for the qualification stage and to ensure sufficient alignment with potential future partners in this initial tender stage,” commented Kristjan Piirsalu, Chief Procurement Officer at RB Rail AS.

More than 2,000 km of catenary systems, approximately 4,350 tonnes of copper materials, and 50,000 masts will need to be installed on the total length of 870 km of the double-track line.

The public procurement includes components such as high-voltage connection points, the connection of traction power substations to the public high voltage electrical grids, traction power substations, overhead contact system, energy control, and command system, and other components directly linked to the energy subsystem.
