Hitachi Rail has delivered a digital signalling upgrade at Ciulnița station, a key node on a major Central European freight corridor.

Hitachi Rail has completed a digital signalling upgrade at Ciulnița station in Romania, strengthening operations on one of the region’s key rail corridors.

The project introduces a new system based on Hitachi’s TAS platform, replacing legacy technology that had been in operation for more than two decades. The upgrade marks a shift towards modern, software-driven signalling systems with higher reliability and performance.

Ciulnița is located on the TEN-T corridor linking Central and Eastern Europe, connecting major nodes from Germany through Central Europe to Bucharest and the port of Constanța. From a rail freight perspective, the corridor plays a critical role in north–south and east–west flows, particularly towards the Black Sea.

Beyond signalling, the project also included infrastructure works, power supply upgrades and telecom modernisation, reflecting a broader approach to network renewal rather than a single-system upgrade.

All systems have been implemented in line with European standards for safety and reliability, supporting long-term performance and interoperability.

For the rail sector, the deployment highlights the ongoing transition towards digital signalling and integrated infrastructure upgrades, which are increasingly seen as key to improving capacity, reliability and competitiveness across European corridors.
